Leisurely Entertaining
The owners of this 40+ year old residence wanted to create an entertaining space for large gatherings, but also a space for relaxation within their own backyard.
The existing driveway and rear patio had no visual or physical separation greatly reducing privacy and sense of space in the backyard. By removing a portion of the driveway and adding in a traditional Scottish Highland stone wall a visual separation was created between the drive and the formal patio entertainment area.
An upper patio featuring a fireplace, and a lower patio with open room for seating and gathering were designed to create large yet functional and divided entertaining areas. The existing upper deck was also incorporated into the design.
The new stone fireplace on a slightly raised patio tier serves as the focal point of the entire yard, whether viewing it from the upper deck, rear lawn area or within the new formal courtyard itself. The fireplace is surrounded by traditional dry lay Scottish Highland stone walls to match into the natural stone veneer of the home itself.
New interlocking stone was installed to add an element of architecture and to offset the look of the natural dray stack stone wall. The brick-like soldier course and refined stone tile body of the patio create visual interest with pattern, texture, and colour.
Two hand-made copper and gas fired lights were added on the stone columns to further bring the element of fire into the garden space. Night lighting was implemented throughout the property and finishes the overall look of the yard to allow for evening entertainment.
This inviting backyard now features various entertaining spaces connected with privacy walls to create a unique and functional backyard.
