The Mill
The Mill project was designed to become a naturalistic backyard oasis with a variety of water, stone, and built features to create the essence of an old sawmill. Recreating an old mill with a covered dining and lounge area allows for the space to be used year round and in any type of weather. The mill features a sunken living room area with a natural gas mortared stone fireplace. One can sit by the warm fire place while listening to the natural spring cascading down the waterfall nearby, as well as watch water trickle down the antique rain chain into a mill stone. The upper section of the mill features a formal dining area with custom cabinetry for comfortable outdoor entertaining. Then entire mill structure can hold up to 40 people and provides the homeowners with endless entertaining options.
The naturalized multi-tier waterfall flows in and around the mill structure into a small pond which would act as the mill pond. The pond and its naturalized plantings creates habitat for a variety of flora and fauna including many Koi fish. A natural stone bridge spans across the pond allowing for an up close view of the fish as well as a perfect feeding perch.
These landscape features are brought to life at night with a variety of low-voltage landscape lights as well as hand-made copper natural gas lights for ambient lighting throughout both the natural and built features. Not only does this strategic lighting provide an attractive view of the landscape at night, but allows for the entire space to enjoyed well into the evening.
A small guest house set into the adjoining woodlot provides a quiet place for overnight guests to enjoy the tranquility and natural setting of this designed landscape. The guest house is complete with a living green roof to more naturally blend into the native woodlot.
