Woodside Drive
This residence backs onto a naturalized area with several mature trees blocking the view to the neighbour’s at the rear of the property. Maintaining and creating new privacy was a main concern for these clients. Privacy was achieved for their custom concrete in-ground spa with a set of custom white cedar screens with climbing trumpet vines. This custom hot tub, which seats up to 8 adults, features an automatic cover and built-in concrete benches. The terrace surrounding the hot tub also features an outdoor kitchen for cooking and entertaining. Unilock Copthorne pavers are used as an accent around the spa and new garden shed while the rest of the hard surfacing is square cut natural flagstone to match into the existing patio. The garden shed was designed to mimic the neighbour’s garden shed and also discreetly houses all of the hot tub utilities. An existing turf drainage swale ran through the center of the yard, splitting it into two spaces. The design connected the two portions of the yard with two large natural stone bridges constructed from large mega-flagstone. The swale was then infilled with river rock to create a dry stream bed effect while still maintaining the required functionality of the swale itself. The new central water feature consists of two bubbling stone columns as well as a natural mega flagstone bridge flush to the existing patio to act as a bridge. The mega flagstone bridge seamlessly connects the two patios and allows for a water weir to be built beneath it to cascade into the pool. The majority of the plantings in this design are native to help blend to the natural woodlot and reduce overall maintenance. The natural flagstone and armor stone used throughout the project also help to create a more naturalistic look.
